    History

The Kollel was established in the nineteenth century by Rabbi Shmuel Wolf Shreiber of Bratislava [died 1872] and Rabbi Meir Ash of Ushgorod [died 1852]. It was the largest Kollel in the Austro-Hungarian empire and in many ways it is still considered the richest and most powerful institution in Mea Shearim. The original location of the community in Jerusalem was in the Rothschild Compound in the Jewish Quarter. The current location of the community is in the “Hungarian Quarter” of Mea Shearim, which was established in 1891.

The archives include letters and records concerning the charitable activities of the Kollel and the immigration of its members to Jerusalem since 19th century. The size of the collection is approximately 200 boxes. The computerised catalogue includes only the bounded documents which are kept in the offices. In addition to the documents they have a very large collection of historical photos, posters (pashkevils) and drawings.
